Andrew Copeland is the Technical Director for Mining based in Knight Piésold’s Johannesburg office. He is a technical specialist in the area of mineral residue management and has a thorough understanding of associated infrastructure, environmental, social, and economic aspects. He has substantial experience in civil geotechnics, acid mine drainage, and underground backfill, as well as significant exposure to the design of mine water treatment plants and long overland slurry pipelines. He has a particular interest in water conservation, including paste and thickened tailings disposal.
Andrew has over 29 years of experience in the mining industry and during this time, he has had extensive exposure to the international mining industry and to the full chain of mining activities and project stages. Twenty years were spent at Anglo American culminating in oversight of all mineral residue facilities and associated technical standards. Reviews were undertaken on a number of multibillion dollar and many smaller projects in Southern Africa, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and USA among others, covering a range of base and precious metal mines, as well as diamond, iron ore, and coal operations. The last four years have been spent at Knight Piésold managing the mine residue, environmental, and geotechnical disciplines across the Southern African offices. He is now a Director of the South African company, as well as a Technical Director for Mining for the Southern African Group of companies, including the Namibian and Zambian offices, while having oversight of all mining projects undertaken in African countries.
