Ronald Scheurenberg is a Technical Consultant based in Knight Piésold’s Johannesburg office. He has over 50 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, dams, and mine waste/tailings disposal in many parts of the world, especially throughout Southern Africa and South America. He has been responsible for the planning, design, execution, and inspection of earthfill and concrete dams, large and small tailings storage projects, and geotechnical investigations for numerous mining, industrial, township, and road developments.
His most significant dam projects in the past 20 years include responsibility for the design and construction of the roller compacted concrete and earthfill Ntimbale Dam in Botswana; design involvement in the rockfill Bedford Dam, a part of the Ingula Pumped Storage Project; and dam safety inspections of a number of dams in the Johannesburg municipal area.
Ronald has been the engineer responsible for the development of major tailings storage facilities right through from initial planning to design, construction, and operations monitoring of many copper, gold, uranium, ash, phosphate, chrome, fluorspar, and other mine residue projects, including the ERGO gold tailings dam, Foskor’s Selati phosphate tailings dam and the Kayelekera uranium tailings dam.
His interests in geotechnical engineering include site investigations, field and laboratory testing, slope stability, problem soils, and the use of geosynthetic materials.
He is also involved in training and mentoring students and graduate engineers from a variety of backgrounds.
