The 14 MW Abiquiu and 8.8 MW El Vado hydroelectric facilities were commissioned in 1989 and 1987 respectively. These facilities included the following key pieces of mechanical and electrical equipment:

  • Two 6.9 MW Francis turbines
  • One 8.8 MW Kaplan turbine
  • Three synchronous generators with static excitation
  • Two generator step-up transformers (4.16/69 kV)
  • Four station service transformers (4160/208 V)
  • Two crane service transformers (4160/480 V) 
Knight Piésold’s Role

Knight Piésold was engaged by Los Alamos County to conduct condition assessments on the major mechanical and electrical equipment at the facilities. The services undertaken as part of the condition assessment included the following:

  • Detailed visual assessment of all components
  • Review of maintenance records
  • Interviews with plant operators
  • Coordination and witnessing of electrical testing
  • Coordination and witnessing of non-destructive examination of turbine runners
  • Preparation of major operation and maintenance plans
  • Preparation of capital plan
