The Barrick Goldstrike Mine (Goldstrike) is a gold mining facility located in Elko and Eureka Counties, Nevada, 27 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Goldstrike mines sulfide and carbonaceous ore from an open pit and two underground mines. Mined ore is crushed, milled and oxidized in one of two processing facilities, an autoclave and a roaster. After oxidation, the ore is leached in a cyanide solution. Spent ore is treated for cyanide destruction before being sent to one of two on-site tailings dams. An extensive water management system is in place to dewater the mines, treat, reuse, and infiltrate mine water via the Boulder Valley Water Management Project.

Knight Piésold’s Role

Knight Piésold provided assistance to Goldstrike with the preparation of its Nevada Water Pollution Control Permit (WPCP) renewal applications for the North Block Operations and the Boulder Valley Water Management Project.  Requested services included organizing the existing historical materials for the renewal application and preparing the application document for these two facility areas in a short time frame to meet regulatory deadlines. Two historic separate WPCPs were merged to complete the Boulder Valley Water Management Project renewal application. Renewal applications focused on summarizing additions and/or modifications made to these permits since the previous renewal in 2008, including preparation of operating plans for several on-site facilities which were included as appendices. The renewal applications also included summaries of monitoring programs to-date and updated site characterization data.
