Project Overview

The Kinsevere Copper Mine is located in the Haut-Kipushi territory in the Haut-Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), approximately 30 km north northwest from Lubumbashi. Copper oxide and transitional material is extracted from three open pits and processed via a solvent-extraction/electrowinning plant to produce copper cathode. 

Project Role

This project deals with the yearly provision of site support for water quality monitoring at MMG Kinsevere Copper Mine, in accordance with DRC Mining Code (Decree No. 038/2003, 26 March 2003). Knight Piésold was responsible for conducting water quality sampling and analysis and bio-monitoring to determine the impact of the mine on the local water resources. The scope of work involved in this project includes:

  • Groundwater quality monitoring
  • Surface water monitoring
  • Potable water monitoring
  • Aquatic bio-monitoring (fish, aquatic invertebrates, and diatoms)
  • Chemical analysis of quarterly ground, surface, and potable water samples
  • Monthly toxicity reporting
  • Quarterly reporting
  • Annual reporting
