Chirano Gold Project

The aim of the project is create an operational water storage facility (WSF) using the Sariehu Pit and to drain the existing WSF to allow a site investigation to be conducted for potential other uses of the area. The Sariehu WSF embankment is a cross-valley embankment at a height of 5 m and approximately 80 m long and keyed into the valley wall and into existing ground to a depth of approximately 3 m.

The embankment design includes the use of zone embankment construction:

  • Upstream and downstream rip rap zone for erosion protection
  • Zone A low permeability section for containment
  • Zone B lateritic fill section
  • A blanket drain is installed at the downstream base of the embankment
Knight Piésold's Role

Knight Piésold was responsible for the design of the facility and for the following:

  • Quality assurance and quality control management of the project
  • Assistance with all technical aspects of project management
  • Design changes and reviews with respect to unforeseen site conditions
  • Design interpretation and implementation of construction drawings
  • All field and laboratory tests
