Kodal Phosphate and Iron Project

Kodal Minerals is investigating tailings and waste rock disposal options for the Kodal Phosphate and Iron Project located in southern Norway, approximately 90 km south of Oslo. The project is a potential phosphate / iron ore mine with a proposed mill throughput of 1.6 Mtpa and mine life of 19 years.  Kodal Minerals is seeking a change to the existing land use permits from the local authorities. To facilitate a land use permit change, environmental and social studies will be commissioned and require a workable mine waste management plan to be outlined in the permit application.

Knight Piésold’s Role

Knight Piésold was retained by Kodal Minerals to undertake a conceptual level scoping study of mine waste storage alternatives. Two potential tailings storage facility (TSF) site locations were identified in the study.

A key design objective was to allow for a staged development of the TSF such that initial works have a manageable construction schedule as well as facilitating progressive land remediation.

Co-disposal of mine waste to form the tailings retention embankments was included within the design concept. The results of the study have been used as part of the public consultation and planning process for the mine.
