Highlights
  • Mine waste management plan
  • Environmental assessment
  • Discontinuous permafrost terrain

The Casino Project, owned by Casino Mining Corporation, is a proposed copper, gold, molybdenum, and silver open pit mine in the Yukon Territory of Canada. The proposed project would process 120,000 tonnes of ore per day over a 22-year mine life.

Knight Piésold’s Role

Knight Piésold became involved with the project for a previous owner in 1993 when we began several geotechnical investigations. These led to additional studies for Casino Mining Corp., culminating in our contribution to a pre-feasibility report in 2011 and a feasibility report in 2013. The project design from Knight Piésold includes a 286-m-high tailings dam constructed of cyclone sand, in a region with discontinuous permafrost. A mine waste management plan was developed by consideration of the geotechnical and geochemical characteristics of the various waste materials and the integration of mine waste disposal requirements.

Parallel to the design input, Knight Piésold coordinated the development of the project’s environmental assessment document and submission to the Yukon Environmental and Social Assessment Board in early 2014. We continue to work with Casino Mining Corp. as the project moves through the permitting review phase.
