Project Overview

Anglo American Sur (AAS) is carrying out a series of projects associated with the reraise of the tailings dam and the operational continuity of its facilities. This includes the South Wall of the Las Tórtolas Tailings Dam Project, wherein the goal is to close a gate located in the southern area of ​​the tailings facility vase. A wall will be built in two stages with borrowed material, up to an elevation of 798 masl.

Project Role

AAS has retained Knight Piésold to develop pre-feasibility engineering for the South Wall of the Las Tórtolas Tailings Dam Project, which includes the following:

  • Design criteria and parameters
  • Preliminary definition of geotechnical parameters
  • Interference identification and solving
  • Design of the wall and complementary works necessary for its operation (waterstop trench, grout curtain, drainage system, seepage collection and recirculation system, tailings transport system, geotechnical instrumentation, and roads)
  • New Southwest pumping station
  • Blackout management system for the LT 2 plant
  • Risk and constructability analysis
  • Capital (CAPEX) and operating (OPEX) cost estimates
