November 13, 2025, Lima, Peru – Knight Piésold Peru participated in the latest edition of “Jueves Minero,” an event organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) in collaboration with the British Embassy in Lima. Held on November 6, the event focused on “Circular Economy: Tailings Management and Resource Reuse in Mining.”
Elio Murrugarra, an engineering project manager at Knight Piésold Peru, delivered a presentation titled “Circular Economy in Peruvian Mining: Tailings Reuse in the Closure of Legacy Sites.”
Murrugarra's presentation examined how Peru—a country with a long-standing mining tradition—faces both significant challenges and opportunities in transforming old environmental liabilities into valuable and sustainable sources. Many legacy tailings facilities, limited by technological constraints of previous decades, still contain recoverable minerals and secondary materials. Today’s advances in modern processing technologies and rising metal prices have made it economically viable to reprocess these materials under a circular economy approach.
The presentation addressed technical and geotechnical aspects, water management, and risk assessment related to tailings reprocessing, emphasizing the importance of considering these factors in a comprehensive project evaluation.

“The integral management of legacy tailings in Peru represents not only a solution to environmental liabilities but also an opportunity to energize the mining sector through principles of circularity and responsible resource use,” Murrugarra stated during his presentation.
The event concluded with a networking session and dinner, fostering valuable knowledge exchange and collaboration opportunities among representatives from public, private, and academic sectors.
Knight Piésold continues to champion sustainable mining development in Peru through innovative solutions that integrate engineering excellence, environmental stewardship, and circular economy principles for responsible resources use.
