November 14, 2025, London, UK – Knight Piésold UK showcased tailings re-mining solutions at MINEX Europe 2025, held October 21-23 in Lisbon, Portugal. As a sponsor of the 9th edition of the MINEX Europe Mining & Exploration Forum, the company demonstrated its commitment to sustainable mining practices while showcasing its strategic expansion into Portugal.
The MINEX Forum, one of the most authoritative international mining events in Europe and Central Asia, brought together over 200 leading industry professionals, policymakers, and investors from nearly 150 companies and organisations across 30 countries. Operating under the theme “Made in Europe: Securing Critical Raw Materials for Sustainable Future,” the conference featured 85 speakers and panellists addressing critical minerals, material supply chains, sustainable decarbonisation in mineral extraction, and pragmatic regulation for Europe’s mineral industry.

Director Richard Elmer, along with Executive Project Manager Lucy Fisher and Senior Geotechnical Engineer João Verde, represented Knight Piésold throughout the three-day conference. Elmer served as moderator of Session 8, titled “Invisible Mining: Addressing EU Raw Material Challenges Through Technological Innovation,” highlighting insights into emerging mining technologies.
During the same session, Verde delivered a presentation on “Tailings Re-mining and Progressive Restoration as Suitable Forms to Reduce Mining Impact.” With tailings posing substantial environmental challenges, such as land degradation, water contamination, and dust pollution, the mining industry is increasingly adopting tailings re-mining to mitigate these impacts, using filter-pressed tailings stacks as alternatives to conventional tailings storage facilities (TSFs).
Verde’s presentation showcased how Knight Piésold has been instrumental in driving this industry shift, offering guidance on cost-effective, environmentally sound TSF design, operation, and closure. The company has been helping mining operators reuse and reprocess mine waste and tailings through the RE:MINE Consortium, a partnership with GSL and Bara Consulting launched in 2024.
The conference participation aligns with Knight Piésold’s strategic expansion into Portugal. With a client portfolio that includes some of the most respected mining companies in the industry, Knight Piésold has been delivering innovative and robust solutions tailored to the unique geotechnical, environmental, and regulatory landscapes across Europe, particularly in Portugal and Spain.
With established resources in Portugal, the company is strengthening its on-the-ground capabilities in Southern Europe to support regional mining operations with specialist guidance in responsible mine waste management. The company’s focus remains on designing TSFs that uphold the highest standards of safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement, in line with Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.
