Project Overview

Zinkgruvan is an underground mine operated continuously since 1857, located approximately 250 km southwest of Stockholm in south-central Sweden. Zinkgruvan is wholly owned by Lundin Mining. Zinkgruvan currently operates two tailings storage facilities (TSF) identified as Enemossen and Enemossen East. Knight Piésold is the Engineer of Record for the Enemossen East TSF, which was commissioned on October 24, 2017. The first of five scheduled raises commenced in 2019 with detailed design and construction. Enemossen East TSF consists of two zoned embankments constructed to a minimum crest elevation of 175 metres for Stage 1, with a further 21 metres permitted.

Project Role

Knight Piésold assisted Zinkgruvan Mining to develop a new tailings storage facility, suitable for storing an estimated 5.4 Mt of tailings solids. The services included:

  • Geotechnical investigation including CPT supervision
  • Detailed design, stages one and two
  • Conceptual design to permitted elevation
  • Construction management / supervision
  • Engineer of Record
