Guillermo Barreda Presents at the Energy Transition Workshop by the British Embassy in Peru

April 12, 2023, Lima, Peru – At the end of March, the British Embassy in Peru held its first Energy Transition Workshop, hosting more than 200 participants from large mining companies and British companies operating in different priority sectors, such as mining, renewable energy, infrastructure, security, and defense.

Three speakers from international companies were invited to share successful experiences in transforming their energy matrix to sustainable sources, decarbonizing and reducing emissions in their supply chain to achieve sustainable mining operations.

Eng. Guillermo Barreda, General Manager of Knight Piésold Peru, made the presentation, "Run-of-River and Pumped Storage – Legacy Renewable Energy Assets,” showing Knight Piésold's commitment to and leadership in supporting the energy transition and decarbonization of mines for sustainable operations. This presentation, which was prepared together with Sam Mottram, Managing Principal of Knight Piésold Canada, discussed how run-of-river and pumped storage hydro developments can become a reliable source of cost-effective, reliable energy, which can be added to a mine’s portfolio of measures in overcoming energy transition challenges.

In addition, Barreda explained how run-of-river hydro, as a low impact asset, reduces a mine’s carbon footprint throughout operations. As a cost-effective source, it gives a mine the ability to afford mining of lower grade ore and thereby extending a mine's life. Barreda also explained how pumped storage hydro makes it possible to shape renewables and make better use of them, being considered a massive “green battery.”

Barreda concluded his presentation by stating that all of these characteristics "...also allow for the improvement of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles and in helping a mine obtain its social license, leaving communities a legacy for future generations and a long-term renewable energy asset.”

For nearly 100 years, Knight Piésold has been designing renewable energy projects for mining clients, having started working on a hydroelectric project for a copper mine in 1925. Knight Piésold provides clients with a wide portfolio of renewable energy development solutions, from project identification, environmental studies, and permitting to detailed engineering, construction, and operational monitoring.

12 de abril de 2023, Lima, Perú – A fines de marzo de este año, la Embajada Británica en Perú organizó la primera edición del “Energy Transition Workshop” invitando a más de 200 contactos entre grandes empresas mineras y gerentes de empresas británicas de diferentes sectores prioritarios, tales como: minería, energías renovables, infraestructura, seguridad y defensa.

Se invitaron a tres expositores de empresas internacionales para compartir experiencias de éxito en la trasformación de la matriz energética a fuentes sostenibles, descarbonización y reducción de emisiones en la cadena de suministro para lograr la sostenibilidad en operaciones mineras.

El Ingeniero Guillermo Barreda, Gerente General de Knight Piésold Peru, realizó una presentación que mostró el compromiso y liderazgo de Knight Piésold en el apoyo para la transición energética, descarbonización y sostenibilidad en operaciones mineras, exponiendo el tema “Centrales de Pasada y Almacenamiento por Bombeo – Activos y legado de Energía Renovable”. Esta presentación, preparada junto a Sam Mottram, Director General de Knight Piésold Canada, expuso cómo las centrales de pasada y el almacenamiento por bombeo se convierten en una fuente confiable de energía costo – efectiva que puede ser añadida al portafolio de medidas que toman las minas para superar el desafío que estamos afrontando de transición energética.

Adicionalmente, se explicó su bajo impacto/huella y como reducen la huella de carbono de la mina; asimismo, para el caso de las centrales de pasada, como permiten reducir costo operativo, y así la extracción de mineral de baja ley; y, por lo tanto, extender la vida útil de las minas. En el caso del almacenamiento por bombeo, se explicó como este tipo de estructuras permiten dar forma a las energías renovables y aprovecharlas mejor, siendo consideradas una “batería verde masiva”.

El Ingeniero Barreda, concluyó su presentación manifestando que todas estas características “…también permiten mejorar los principios de gobernanza, sociales y ambientales (ESG) y ayudan a la mina en la obtención de la licencia social, dejando a las comunidades un legado para las futuras generaciones y un activo en energía renovable de largo plazo”.

Finalmente, se pudo compartir con toda la audiencia, cómo Knight Piésold ofrece al cliente una amplia cartera de servicios y un solo lugar de compra de estas soluciones, que van desde el concepto hasta la implementación, incluyendo preparación de estudios, investigaciones y análisis geotécnicos, manejo de aguas, obtención de permisos ambientales y supervisión durante la construcción.
