TD15A Tailings Storage Facility Capacity Increase and Buttressing Project

Client
Mopani Copper Mines Plc

Location
Copperbelt, Zambia

Highlights
  • Conducting public consultations (project scoping and preparation of Terms of Reference including public disclosure of the Environmental Impact Statement)
  • Conducting environmental and social baseline studies within and around the project site
  • Preparing Environmental and Social Impact Statement including Environmental and Social Management Plan
Project Overview

The TD15A tailings storage facility (TSF) is owned and operated by Mopani Copper Mines Plc (MCM). The facility is located at Nkana Mine in the Copperbelt Province of the Republic of Zambia. MCM has proposed to increase the capacity of the facility as well as to increase the factor of safety of the facility by buttressing it with waste rock.

Project Role

Knight Piésold is assisting MCM to prepare an environmental and social impact statement for the proposed TD15A TSF Capacity Increase and Buttressing Project. Services included:

  • Project scoping
  • Public consultation
  • Environmental and social impact assessment
  • Environmental and social impact statement preparations

The project includes a vertical expansion of the TD15A TSF over the area of the existing footprint of the facility. The vertical raise of the facility will involve an upstream raise with 1V:3H side slopes modelled as a single 9 m lift to a final elevation of 1262 masl. This is expected to provide enough storage volume to accommodate the total expected tailings volume to life of mine.

In addition, the project includes buttressing the west and central walls of TD15A TSF with waste rock. It will involve hauling the waste rock from existing mine waste dumps, dumping and compacting at the TD15A project site.
