June 13, 2025, Lima, Peru – From June 4 to 6, 2025, Knight Piésold Peru conducted a specialized technical training course in Quito titled "Design, Operation, and Closure of Tailings and Waste Rock Storage Facilities," aimed at authorities from Ecuador’s mining and environmental sectors. This initiative was carried out at the request of Solaris Resources, one of Knight Piésold's clients in the region, with the goal of strengthening regulatory and technical capacities for the safe and sustainable management of mining waste deposits.
Over the course of three days, Knight Piésold shared technical knowledge with representatives from various Ecuadorian government agencies, including the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), the Mining Regulation and Control Agency (ARCOM), and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition (MAATE). The training covered key aspects of designing, operating, and technically closing tailings and waste rock storage facilities in accordance with international standards, governance, and sustainability criteria.
The training course was led by the Knight Piésold team comprising General Manager Guillermo Barreda; Engineering Manager Rubén Vargas; and specialists Fanny Herrera, Néstor Choquehuanca, and Kathia Tabra, who focus on geotechnical, water management, and geochemical aspects. Each speaker contributed technical expertise from their respective fields, covering topics including site characterization, geotechnical design of deposits, water management and dam breach analysis, water quality and geochemistry, best practices for safe operation and tailings governance, technical criteria for facility closure, and typical failure mechanisms that must be considered early in a project's lifecycle.
This initiative demonstrates Knight Piésold’s ongoing commitment to the sustainable development of the mining industry in the region. Through collaboration with clients and technical exchange with government authorities, Knight Piésold strengthens its position as a strategic partner in providing engineering solutions that address regulatory, social, and environmental challenges facing the mining industry today. The experience in Ecuador reaffirms the company's dedication to sharing knowledge and best practices that help raise technical standards for the benefit of all stakeholders involved in the development of responsible mining projects.
